KUALA LUMPUR GRAND PRIX

MALAYSIA

In 2014 Apex partnered with world leading temporary street circuit specialists, Gardini, to provide GT Global Race with a technical feasibility study and master plan for a temporary street circuit in the heart of Malaysia’s Capital City, Kuala Lumpur. Apex were contracted as lead technical consultant to deliver the circuit for its inaugural event in August 2015.

The circuit, 3.3 km in length and adjacent to the iconic Petronas towers, was granted an FIA Grade 3 licence and played host to a number of International Race Series with a demonstration headline event featuring 5 cars from the V8 Supercars headlining as part of a 5 year deal with the promotor. Other series that visited the circuit for this inaugural event included Lamborghini Super Trofeo, Formula Masters and, unique to the KL City Grand Prix, the KL GT City Cup.

The event attracted huge crowds estimated to be in the region of 200,000 per day over the race weekend. Temporary Circuits built in older city streets can be extremely complex projects with a number of challenges that must be carefully considered including track design, safety, event overlay, traffic and stakeholder management. These considerations were of particular significance in one of Asia’s largest cities.

During the design it was always at the forefront of our minds to develop a circuit that is first about safety, yet one which is exciting to watch and to drive. Moreover, it had to be implemented in such a way as to minimise disruption to the busy 'Golden Triangle' area of Kuala Lumpur and within an extremely short delivery timeframe.

TESTIMONIAL

Apex Circuit Design rose to the challenge and delivered for us an exceptional circuit that was licensed by the FIA, universally applauded by drivers and spectators and which minimised disruption to the city during its operation
