KYALAMI FORMULA 1 UPGRADE

SOUTH AFRICA

Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit in South Africa has long been an iconic motorsport venue, last hosting a Formula 1 Grand Prix in 1993. When the current circuit owners purchased the venue in 2014, their vision was to restore Kyalami as a world-class destination and bring Formula 1 back to Africa. In 2024, Apex Circuit Design was contracted to develop the technical roadmap to achieve FIA Grade 1 accreditation, a prerequisite for hosting Formula 1.

Apex worked closely with the FIA and circuit stakeholders to produce a “light-touch” engineering solution that preserved Kyalami’s celebrated 4.52 km layout while introducing the safety, infrastructure, and operational upgrades required to meet the highest international standards. The scope of work included the design of extended run-off zones, new debris fencing, upgraded barriers, kerb modifications, and drainage improvements. These interventions were carefully balanced to minimise disruption to existing activities while future-proofing the facility.

In parallel with the technical upgrade planning, Apex also explored credible options for an event overlay to support the organisation of a Formula 1 Grand Prix. This work ensures the venue would be operationally ready to host a race once a promoter is appointed by the South African government. By combining permanent upgrades with temporary event infrastructure planning, Apex has positioned Kyalami to transition seamlessly into hosting world-class events.

The FIA formally approved the proposals in June 2025, granting Kyalami a three-year window to complete construction. Once implemented and inspected, this will make Kyalami the only FIA Grade 1 circuit in Africa.

This milestone represents both a technical achievement and a symbolic step toward returning Formula 1 to South Africa. While FIA approval of the design does not guarantee the immediate addition of a Grand Prix to the calendar, commercial agreements with Formula One Management and government support are also required, it provides Kyalami with the infrastructure foundation necessary to host the event.

Apex’s involvement has been central in moving Kyalami from aspiration to readiness. Through precise engineering interventions, phased implementation, and stakeholder alignment, Apex has delivered a pathway for Africa’s return to Formula 1. Beyond F1, the upgrades and overlay planning will strengthen Kyalami’s capacity to attract international series and support South Africa’s motorsport economy.

In summary, Apex Circuit Design’s work at Kyalami has enabled the circuit to take the decisive step from Grade 2 to Grade 1 capability. The approved upgrades, combined with credible overlay options, respect the venue’s history, ensure compliance with the latest FIA safety standards, and create opportunities for South Africa to re-establish itself on the global motorsport stage.
