KYMIRING REBORN
APEX CIRCUIT DESIGN AND THE REVIVED KYMIRING
After some difficult early years, Finland’s KymiRing is poised to host its first-ever international motorsport events – with Apex Circuit Design playing a key role in unlocking the circuit’s long-awaited potential.
Once earmarked for MotoGP but affected by global events causing financial setbacks and leading to incomplete construction, KymiRing is finally fulfilling its purpose.
In the summer of 2025, the venue will stage three major international events: RallyX in June, the Motocross World Championshipin July, and the World Rallycross Championship in August.
These events mark a historic milestone for Finnish motorsport – and a turning point for a circuit that once seemed destined to remain unfinished.
Apex helping KymiRing to turn a corner
Apex Circuit Design worked on the initial concept plan for KymiRing back in 2011 and when the circuit changed ownership at the start of 2024, the new leadership recognised the need for expert input to turn vision into reality.
Apex Circuit Design was brought in to assess the site, enhance the masterplan, and develop key racing infrastructure with a focus on delivering FIA and FIM compliant layouts on an ambitious timeline.
Working closely with the team at KymiRing, Apex has supported the phased development of the rallycross track, ensuring that the layout meet international standards for safety, spectacle, and sustainability.
With Apex’s experience in mixed-surface design and fan-centric circuit architecture, the project has accelerated – with the rallycross track now over 70% complete and the motocross layout even further ahead.
Confidence from the Paddock
Speaking at a recent media event at KymiRing, two-time World Rally Champion Marcus Grönholm praised the quality of the facilities and the potential of the rallycross layout:
“The racetrack itself is top-notch. This place is certainly well suited for rallycross. The teams have a good pit and the facilities are already strong.”
Grönholm, a household name in Finland and across global rallying, even hinted at a possible return to action:
“It could always be a bit interesting... You learn the track quickly in rallycross.”
His son, Niclas Grönholm, will compete at KymiRing as part of the World Rallycross Championship in August – bringing added local interest and generational continuity to the event.
Getting back in the ring
The transformation hasn’t been without scepticism. Given the circuit’s history, fans have expressed doubts about whether events will go ahead as promised. CEO Kornél Öry has responded with transparency and optimism:
“Some fans are asking whether the track will be completed on time. That’s understandable. But we believe that trust will be earned at the first event in June when everything runs smoothly.”
Ticket sales are already under way, with up to 20,000 visitors expected for the August rallycross finale.
For Apex Circuit Design, KymiRing represents more than a design project – it’s a statement of what’s possible when world-class expertise is combined with an experienced and passionate operational team with a bold vision.
