In 2011, Apex were commissioned as lead consultant to undertake the detailed design and engineering of a luxury, multi-use motorsport destination in Shaoxing, China. As part of this commission, Apex appointed International Group, AECOM and Ridge and Partners as co-consultants for operational planning, civil engineering and a mix of architecture, cost consultancy and project management support respectively. Apex also provided pre-operational support and the first personnel for circuit operations.

The multi award winning 51 hectare site includes a design for a 3.2 km FIA Grade 2 race circuit and infrastructure including a medical centre, an 800m CIK kart circuit, a multi-use pit building and conference facility, a private members club, a five star hotel, 22 exclusive apartments overlooking the circuit, a 9 storey office tower and a multi-storey car market. Following completion of the master plan, Apex worked with KPMG to undertake a business feasibility model of the project, which provided crucial information to inform the later design stages by the design team. 

The project has seen Apex and it’s co-consultants working closely with the client’s appointed Chinese local design institutes HHG and SMEDI, to ensure that the design meets the Local Authority regulations for approval.

Construction of Phase 1 of the Zhejiang International Circuit is now complete with the main circuit, kart circuit, hotel, exhibition centre and main welcome centre now open.

Since its completion the project has achieved two awards:
